Seven Last-Minute Labor Day Getaways to Book Right Now

Avalon Bay on Catalina Island, in California, one of the possibilities for a last-minute Labor Day getaway.

Labor Day is an opportune time to take a last-minute, fun-filled getaway, says Adam Weissenberg, the head of travel, hospitality and leisure at Deloitte, a hospitality services company. “Compared with Memorial Day and Fourth of July, which are incredibly busy travel periods, Labor Day is slower because the school year has already started in many parts of the country,” he said. “And, you can definitely get good value for your money.”

Here are seven possibilities around the country, at a variety of price points.

Loews Coronado Bay Resort, in Coronado, Calif., has an “Escape from LA” package that’s ideal for the long weekend. The package deal includes accommodations, a $50 resort credit and a round-trip transfer in a Tesla vehicle between Los Angeles and Coronado Bay. Guests can spend their weekend cruising the bay in a sailboat, kayaking in the resort’s private marina or simply relaxing on the beach. Bookings start at $399 a night.

Another option in California is a trip to Catalina Island, an hour’s boat ride from Southern California. Travelers stay at the Pavilion Hotel, just across the street from the beach, and the package includes transportation between the island and Long Beach, breakfast, an evening wine and cheese reception in the property’s ocean-view courtyard, the use of beach cruiser bicycles to get around, a zip line eco-tour and access to the new Catalina Aerial Adventure, a series of challenging ropes courses and zip lines. Bookings start from $545 a night for two people.

If you’re looking for a Labor Day getaway that the whole family — including children who may not be back in school yet — can enjoy, consider a visit to the Mid-Atlantic. In Hershey, Pa., Hershey Lodge and The Hotel Hershey have a package over Labor Day that includes free breakfast for a family of four and free admission to Hersheypark amusement park for those ages 17 and under. Packages start at $458 a night for a family of four.

Ideal for couples looking for a beach weekend, the “Retreat to Romance” package from Rosewood Bermuda is a three-night escape at a recently renovated beachfront resort. The offer includes round-trip airport transfers, breakfast, a couples massage, a private beach dinner and an evening turndown with rose petals and Champagne. Packages start at $546 per night for two people.

For food lovers, Magee Homestead, in Saratoga, Wyo., an adults-only property that’s a three-hour drive from Denver, is hosting a Caribbean-themed weekend over Labor Day.

Gianluca re Fraschini, the chef at Eden Roc at Cap Cana in the Dominican Republic, and Mark Banthorpe, the chat at Calabash Resort in Grenada, will cook several meals over the weekend that feature Caribbean cuisine, sometimes with a Rocky Mountain twist, like grilled jerk pheasant with scotch bonnet, citrus and oregano. Packages start at $1,400 per person per night, and include all meals and alcoholic beverages, a rum tasting and cigars each evening. It also includes additional activities such as horseback riding, guided hikes and yoga sessions.

Adventures on the Gorge, an adventure resort near Fayetteville, W.Va., set along the rim of the New River Gorge, has a special over Labor Day where travelers get two of the same activity when they buy one.

Only certain activities are included, but they are some of the best. Whitewater rafting, for example, is $149 for two people instead of for one person, and zip lining is $99 for two people instead of for one person. The resort has a variety of accommodations ranging from $15 a night for campsites to $1,150 a night for more luxurious cabins.

Travelers seeking rejuvenation from the inside out may want to consider YO1 Luxury Nature Cure, a 1,310-acre resort in the Catskills town of Monticello, N.Y., where each guest gets a customized wellness program based on naturopathy, Ayurveda and yoga. A stay includes consultations with a team of Ayurvedic practitioners, yoga instructors and physiotherapists, all meals and classes and daily spa treatments. Bookings start at $900 per person per night.
